2008 Joint Academia/Industry Presentation

Introduction: “Challenges and Opportunities for the Pathologist in Industry and Academia”

Teresa Compton (Novartis), Michael Oglesbee (The Ohio State University) and Heath Thomas (GlaxoSmithKline)

The Coalition Scientific Conference was designed to highlight the results of Coalition Fellows’ training efforts and to provide a forum for exchange of information between academia and industry.  The 2nd Coalition Scientific Conference was held in conjunction with the 2008 Annual Meeting of the ACVP and ASVCP, and was attended by Fellows, their academic and industrial mentors and the Board of Governors.

In addition to presentations by Fellows themselves (posted under the 2008 Conference), the program included a joint presentation by representatives from Academia and Industry entitled “Challenges and Opportunities for the Pathologist in Industry and Academia.”  Guest speaker Dr. Teresa Compton began the presentation with an overview entitled “Career Choices:  Perspectives from Academia and Industry.”  This was followed by a panel discussion led by Drs Michael Oglesbee and Heath Thomas, and included panelists Drs. Mark Ackermann (Iowa St Univ) and Timothy Baszler (Washington St Univ) representing academia, and Drs. Noël Dybdal (Genentech) and Pierre Tellier (Charles River Labs) representing industry.

A copy of Dr. Compton’s presentation and bullet points used to lead the panel discussion are posted below.
